QQ in BB - raise and call to you...
I'm pretty new to the table, so no reads. Call? Raise? Push?
Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t30 (10 handed) converter CO (t1450) Button (t1622) Hero (t1110) BB (t920) UTG (t1160) UTG+1 (t1580) UTG+2 (t470) MP1 (t1066) MP2 (t835) MP3 (t832) Preflop: Hero is SB with Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. UTG calls t30, 4 folds, MP3 raises to t100, 1 fold, Button calls t100, Hero ? |

I like the call here, preparing to check and jam the flop as long as no Ace or King comes.

I would go for a reraise trying to isolate MP3 rather than playing versus DB as well. As long as no King or Ace comes out, check and let him hang himself hopefully.

Re: QQ in BB - raise and call to you...
I don't like a call here because if an A or K does come, you have no real reason to suspect your hand is still not best. At 15/30 blinds, t100 raises and calls are made with an enormous range of hands and you don't want to put yourself in a position where you have to fold because you failed to take control of the hand pf.
I don't like the push because you need to extract more chips with this holding. MP3 *may* call because he has already committed 15% of his stack, but he is more likely to fold (though early in these tourneys, we do see some absolutely nutty calls...). How MP3 acts will go a long way towards determining whether the button comes along for the ride. I make a raise to t400 or 500 expecting MP3 to fold or push (he cannot call with his stack) and the button to probably fold. Either way, my money is in no later than first action on the flop. I like raise by a wide margin, followed by the push with a call a very very very distant third. |

i'd raise the pot so make it 400 or 500 if you wish.
I don't like checking! |

Re: QQ in BB - what I did...
I knew it was weak-tight when I did it, but I just called.
I've recently made the transition from Stars to Party, and have had to rethink my estmates of folding equity in a given situation. (My rough formula is take what FE should be, and divide by two.) My plan was call to see the flop, and see how things developed. So, in essence I played the third best hand for set/overpair value. Yuck. Looking back, I feel sick about it. Of course I should have raised. The original raise could have been Ax, or JTs for that matter, and the call didn't scream strength. In any case, the flop came with an Ace and King, and from there the hand played itself. One or both of these guys had an ace, and I have played enough low buy-in tournaments to know that no bet would take down the pot. I checked, original raiser led out, button raised, and my weak-tight ass folded. Sigh. Life would be easier if I was results-oriented. Sam |

[/ QUOTE ] I guess it depends on which play is correct. If raising is correct, I played it badly and as a result avoided losing chips. (The old, "I folded AA after a ten-high flop because I knew he would suck out on me. And a ten came on the river, so I was right!") If I were results-oriented, I'd be patting myself on the back - "I knew an ace and king would come!" I didn't get my chips in when I was ahead because I didn't want a race. Right or wrong, I figured I'd have better spots. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll ponder this one some more... Sam |
