Default do they ever lay down a better hand?

I've read it on here many times, and had it recently reiterated by a strong player, that betting 4-flush boards is nearly always correct. Theoretically this makes some sense, but I see people calling all the time with all kinds of trash. I suspect it may be too well known at this point to be effective in these online games. Anyone have a contrary opinion?

SB is a maniac and I expect him to raise any two preflop.

Party Poker 10.00/20.00 Hold'em (6 handed) link

Preflop: Hero is BB with 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
3 folds, SB raises, Hero calls.

Flop: (4.00 SB) 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (3.00 BB) 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, SB calls.

Planning to check behind unless 7 or 9 hits.

River: (7.00 BB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

Final Pot: 9.00 BB.

your plan was to check behind- why didn't you? maniacs aren't known for good folds. they are, however, known for crazy river c/r on 4 flushes....

I'm guessing he wants a baby heart to fold...but still. I don't think it would unless he has a high FTRB %.

Obviously I didn't bet for value here, I was hoping to fold a better hand.

I tried to check behind in a similar situation during a sweat session. Coach suggested I bet. I've since been trying to bet these boards in and out of position. I don't like the results at all so far. Perhaps I took his advice too generally.

Also, it's as a value bet not a bluff.

I dunno, the value seems very thin IMO. what hands is he calling with enough there to make it worth the bet. Is he really calling with A or K high that has no [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] in the hand for this to work, a lower pair on the board, a lower PP?

I really dunno, this seems more like a semi-bluff then a value bet here
