Hooking up 1 monitor to a laptop

I just received my Inspiron 9300 in the mail today. It is amazing, but i'd like to find a way to 8 table with it and another monitor. Once I plug the monitor into my laptop, how do I make it so that I can open up 4 games on my Inspiron and another 4 games on the monitor and the mouse can scroll back and forth between the screens (when I tried it the monitor just showed the same screen as the laptop)?
