I really like the Weezer album. scrub and I listened to it forever on the way to and from Vegas. I haven't heard the Coldplay one yet, but I watched a performance on MTV where they played a lot of the new sogns and I really liked a lot of them.

Once you've listened to them all, let us know what you think.

i think people who are critical of Weezer & "Beverly Hills" are probably a bit more serious about their music than i am.

my only criteria is an unquantifiable hum & sing-along-ability & catchiness-factor. my favorites on that album are "Perfect Situation" & "Pardon Me" & "Freak Me Out"

I like the Audioslave disc as well, and I'm going to try and pick up Beck & Coldplay some time soon.

Arcade Fire and Go Team were my two favorite albums of 2004. Definitely get them. Stars : Set Yourself on Fire was probably my third, FWIW.

Bloc Party : Silent Alarm, Spoon : Gimme Fiction, and Common : Be are probably my favorite three so far this year. Sleater-Kinney was very good, Coldplay was meh, Beck was meh, Stephen Malkmus wasn't as good as I hoped though still worth a listen. Haven't heard the others.

Arcade Fire -- Funeral is very impressive, a must buy.
Audioslave -- I thought that this one was better than their first, it surprised me (in a good way).
Beck -- I liked this, but it isn't his best work.
Bloc Party -- Bloc Party really impressed me too.
Coldplay -- X&Y is boring compared to the previous two albums.
Stephen Malkmus -- I loved this album.
Weezer -- This one is growing on me.

OK. I've now listened to the albums in this order:

First I listened to The Go! Team. I didn't really get why everyone loved it so much on the first listen. So I listened to it again and agree that it is pretty damn good. I'm not quite convinced that it's great yet, but we'll see after a few more listens. There's definitely a lot of good stuff here. I especially like Ladyflash, Bottle Rocket, and Huddle Formation.

Those of you who love this album should check out Bran Van 3000. 1998's Glee is one of my favorite albums ever. 2001's Discosis is pretty cool too.

Next I listened to Arcade Fire. I liked this album a lot. The song currently on the radio, Rebellion, is really good and very catchy. I don't think this album is as great and revolutionary as others here seem to feel. Definitely good, but a ways from great, IMO.

Then I put in Bloc Party. Boy, was I disappointed here. Based on reviews I read, out of the list of albums this was probably the style of music I'm most likely to like. And I liked the album just fine. But it did not seem very original or creative at all.

White Stripes were next. Man, I really love this album. As usual, really diverse and unique while maintaining that distinctive White Stripes feel. Take, Take, Take and I'm Lonely are my two favorites.

So the ranking for me of these four is:

White Stripes
The Go! Team
Arcade Fire
Bloc Party

While I am somewhat disappointed by your Bloc Party review, I just listened to GBMS for the first time tonight too. Spot on review IMO.

Just wanted to point out that SFer shamelessly stole referring to these bands as "angular postpunk" from me, and I probably stole it from the Village Voice or Pitchfork or something.

Besides, they're all just Gang of Four cover bands anyway. Which is a good thing, since Gang of Four rules.

Listening to Weezer right now. It is fine, but kind of, I dunno, uninspired. I do like that Beverly Hills song a lot, though. Man, that is catchy. A lot of the songs are kind of good, but nothing is really grabbing me.
