from people I've talked to who are making the transition, it seems like it's an incredibly hard one to make. step in and out a few times. get comfortable. mine the game. make sure you're ready. take shots. you don't have to make a splash. don't get discouraged if you drop a couple of dimes. it's to be expected. it's a scary game. I've started 2 of my sessions by dropping a dime in 75 hands. that's some scary stuff. I can't imagine anyone would feel comfortable in that game with under 20k. maybe I'm just a vagina, and according to my location, I like them beefy

Shrug, I took 1k that I wouldn't care about losing and took a shot from 2/4. I'm up 3k right now and haven't looked back. Maybe I got lucky and I don't have enough hands to prove I'm a winner but it's working so far.

Just be aware that you should expect to have runs where you lose 3k once every week or two...

I'm recreational and I had a 300 BB downswing in December. Then again, I'm not the best in the game, but I'm OK.

The way to figure this out is to play a few hundred thousand hands and them compute your BR requirements from your hourly rate and your SD. If you lose more than you can tolerate before getting to that many hands, drop down for a while.

If you want to be certain of not going bust, you need an infintely sized bankroll *shrug*

Davidross's experience is probably the tailend of the distribution.

We decided to play for money last night, but since I suck we had to handicap it. GoT is now $10 richer.

This post and much of this thread contains a common misconception. The 300 BB rule refers to a starting bankroll. That is you start with 300 BB and let your BR grow, never withdrawl. If you do this you are probably pretty safe starting with 300 BB. That is because when you hit the eventual 300 BB losing streak, you likely will have much more than 300 BB.

On the other hand if you continuously draw down your BR to 300 BB, then you do not have nearly enough. As GOT said 1000BB is more like it.

The chance of at some time having a 300 BB losing streak is much greater than the chance of going broke starting with 300 BB and letting the BR grow.
