What is the origin of \"bump\"?
I see it in many threads.
It appears to be some sort of congratulatory thing, as in "well said" or "way to go". But how did it start? Typical newbie question, posted in the proper place, I hope. |

Re: What is the origin of \"bump\"?
"bump" is a filler message to keep a topic towards the front of the thread list since messages with new replies are posted first. Hence the term.

Re: What is the origin of \"bump\"?
Well you see, a long time ago there was a young pimply faced kid. This kid discovered the interweb and the message boards contain within. These boards made him feel special, and powerful. He garnered the respect he lacked in real life by arguing with other kids around the world. One day this kid posted a perfectly crafted message, filled with 'lol', 'ur', and 'omg', but nobody cared. His message slipped off the end of the page unanswered. Knowing that there was no way his message was pointless drivel with no substance, and that there was no way his topic was posted in the past and thoroughly responded to, he responded to his own message to bump it to the front of the queue, given all those who obviously missed this spectacle of prose a chance to correct their mistake.
And, the 'bump' was born and continues to be used to this day by those whose messages go ignored for good reason. |
