Default Need some courage

Hey all,

I'd like to move up to mid limits. My game is solid, and I am a 3.5+/100 winner at 2-4, 3-6, and 5-10 over more than 200k hands.

I find I lack the courage. I tell myself I will move up, but just keep datamining the 15-30 and haven't moved yet. I watch those games, and the play is not great. I am certain I will beat the games, but the swings scare the pants off me. Money is not a huge deal to me, but it is not insignificant either. Basically I pull about 3-4k a month out of poker, and am not sure I want to risk that comfortable income.

I do know, however, that I cannot keep playing as much as I am now, so moving up in order to cut down on hands played is probably going to be essential to me keeping up my $ winrate. I also worry about playing suboptimally when the money means more to me.

Can anyone provide a shot of courage? Any insight at all?

Thanks.

~ Tilts

I submit that you should simply play fewer hands as necessary, and be satisfied with the lower income. Think about it: playing 15/30 at 1.0 BB/100 for enough hands means you will have a $9000 downswing. Obviously I have no intimate knowledge of your psyche, but from what I can infer I suggest staying lower.

Do you play 6-max? Learning is a good way to strengthen your game without increasing the stakes. You'll have a much better chance to succeed at 15-30 with this experience.

There are no magic words of courage to be found in this forum. Confidence comes from hard work and success. Keep looking for ways to improve your game and you may gain the courage you need.

BTW, there is this place in between 5-10 and 15-30 called 10-20.

Thanks. After much observation, I think 15-30 is a softer game. Much softer, actually.

I am comfortable with SH play and win at the same rate (actually slightly higher), but I really don't enjoy it, so 15-30 seems the natural place for me to move to. 10-20 is a SH game mainly on PP.

As for the earlier poster that said I would have a 9k downswing ... a 300 BB downswing, while possible, is really seeing monsters under the bed. I am always surprised how many doomsayers there are on here. My worry is not with some theoretically possible yet highly improbable 300BB downswing, but rather with the standard 50-100 BB swings that come up. Those would be pretty hard on me mentally, I think.

Tilts,

5/10 6 max is in another world of beatable compared to 15/30 and almost as profitable anyway, especially if you have rakeback. It is the best risk/reward ratio on Party. If I was starting over, I would jump in to the 5/10 as soon as I had $500, it's plenty for that level.

Don't stress out about moving to 15/30 and higher, learn to crush the 6 max and make a killing. It will probably make you a better player as well. Then move up. You are deluding yourself completely if you think the 15 is softer than 5/10 6 max and you will be in for a rude surprise.

Good luck,

Nigel

this is funny you mean $1500 maybe more like $2500-$3500. $500 thats funny -thats a 20 minute swing at $5-10 6MAX.

No, I mean $500. If I drop back below $150 I would just drop down and play 1/2. $500 is plenty for a shot at 5/10 6 max, the game is that soft.

I tried to empty out an old account with less than $50 in it the other day by losing it at 5/10, I ended up cashing out with over $700 a few hours later.

Waiting until you have $2500-$3000 to take a shot a at 5/10 6 max if you are a 3BB+ winner (like the OP) is just crazy.

[/ QUOTE ]silly stuff.. even assuming the OP is telling the truth and is a 3.00bb/100 winner like he is at all his limits $500 is woefully inadequate.
