Heads up I call this down figuring he may have you beat.

Thanks for the post...I'm sure I would have raise the flop for an "F U" statement.

A possible play in this situation is to raise the flop.

If he just calls he has K rag.
If he raises he has good king or a three.

The raise will get you free play when it is not so expensive on the turn sometimes.

If he three bets you just lay it down.

Raising this flop against an unknown is pretty bad.

I was also misplaying this hand until recently. Check out this thread, Ed likes the call/call/call line. I'm just trying to expand on it.

Thanks. And to think I read that thread originally... guess it didn't sink in. Better work on my memory.

I want to make sure that I understand the concepts here.

If we're behind, we want to minimize our losses.

If we're ahead, we want to keep him betting or calling in order to maximize our gains (i.e. not scare him off)

Right?

The raise is for information. If you plan on playing this hand a raise is important here and may save you money down the line.

This is a classic hand to raise for information.

You have a good hand and while the action is cheap you need to find out as much as possible. It also gets you a free card most of the time therefore saving you a bet.

I disagree with you in this instance.

Raising for information is overrated. If he flat calls and bets the turn, what hand does he have then?

Read this entire thread.

Hopefully that thread will help you along here. A lot of people raise this flop, especially "for information." That doesn't make it the right play.

Raising will tend to get weaker hands to fold, while you continue to pay off stronger hands. Since raising will not get the weaker hands to pay more, and it will make you pay more to the stronger hands, it has to be less than optimal. (optimal would be a losing hand putting his entire stack in, while paying 0 to a hand you're significantly behind)

The question is then, should you fold or call? Since you're getting 4.25:2.5, you only need to have 37% equity to make a call down profitable. It's really hard to select a range of hands here for villian, but a reasonable selection shows you have more than eneough equity to call down.
