definition needed

I've been reading a lot on this site and keep seeing the word "overlay" coming up in regards to MTT's . Could someone please define it and tell me how to calculate it?

Was going to try to give you my definition but the one at bonuswhores says it better:

Overlay is the amount of added money by the site, divided by the number of participants. For example, if a site adds $500 to a prize pool, and 100 players participate, then the overlay is $5.00 ($500 / 100 = $5).
