Default Tunica labor day weekend - Grand NL game?

Anyone else going to be in Tunica on labor day weekend?

I'll be at the Grand Casino on Thursday night before labor day. I called up their poker room and asked what NL games they typically run on a friday night. They said they had a 2-5 game with no max buy in.

I typically play NL. Does anyone know how this game plays? How much do people typically sit with?

I did a search and a few people said there was a 1-2 NL game at a different casino (horseshoe?) that was supposed to be good.

Any suggestions? Which NL game is the softest? Should I just skip the grand all together? Should I take a cab to a different casino?

Thanks,

KoW

gold strike (next door to horseshoe) has the 1/2 NL game.
It sometimes plays as the wildest NL game ever.

Don't know about the Grand 2/5 NL game....but it would very much surprise me if that game was anything but crazy (especially on a holiday).

Also wouldn't surprise me at all if Gold Strike had a 2/5 NL game going over the weekend (since they have the 1/2 NL game going everyday I think).

I might actually head down to Tunica for one of the nights of that weekend...but I likely would not be playing NL.

horseshoe had a good 2/5 last week. gold strike had a 1/2 that half the time was played like a great 2/5 or so since everyone buys in for about 500. Sometimes it gets crazy and plays like a game i have never seen before.

yes....when i've played the gold strike game it is not uncommon to see 2 or 3 stacks in the $2k+ range playing insanely aggressively.

One drunk on my side of the table loved to flash us his fancy bluffs as he was playing a hand against someone on the other end.
He would bet big...then barely flash us his 73o on a board of AKQ....and then cackle hysterically as he would take it down.
He actually wasn't that bad a player believe it or not in a Gus Hansen "I could have anything and I'm going to bet so insanely as to make you constantly afraid of me" kind of way.

Other times I've played have just been with your typical bad players betting too strong.

They call it "1/2 NL" only because those happen to be the blind amounts...but this sure isn't like your old 1/2 $100-max NL game.
with the no-max buy-in get ready for some real insanity (some of the time anyway...other times it can play pretty tight-passively in stretches with few big pots).

I typically 4-table the $200 NL game on Party and play $2-$5 $300max NL live. Obviously you've never seen me play, but how likely do you think it is that I'll get run over by hyper aggressive stacks with 1000+BB stacks? I've never played in a game that deep. Are you a pretty experienced NL player? Did you feel like you got run over?

I have very little NL cash-game experience.
I was quite intimidated by the game there so I was just buying in short and playing pretty tight (which is still +EV in that game).

The wildness of the game varies. If you are a reasonable NL player then you certainly won't get completely run-over. But you obviously could be just a bad-beat or two from getting REALLY far down REALLY fast.

buy-in for just $100 when you sit-in if you like...and then add more to your stack later if you're comfortable and think it would be your best move.
If you are still afraid of busting out for your whole buy-in...then don't buy-in for too much in the first place (of course...once you win a hand or two you can't remove chips from the table...but I think you get the point).

Anyway - it can be intimidating...but the play certainly isn't good...it's just for a lot of bets sometimes.
You have to remember that every southern-shmoe from Arkansas, Alabama and all points in-between converges in Tunica to play poker. They want to play NL because they saw it on TV and they want to be just like those guys.
Some of them are truly awful.

there are some decent players too of course...but the guys who are playing 50% of their hands and always betting at the flop and thinking they're tricky will make themselves apparent to you fairly quickly.

Whether you will get run-over by gigantic bluffs from total fish or not will depend on the quality of the competition on that given night of course. Sometimes the game is SO wild that it can be pretty tough to handle for NL noob's like me.

Microbob-

Thanks for the post. I appreciate it.

I think it'll be a good experience for me down there. I'm looking forward to it.

I think I'll give it a go with a $300 buy in or so. That'll give me a 150BB stack which I'm very comfortable with.

Thanks,
KoW

"It plays like NL game Ive never seen before"

Thats because its true NL, not a capped buy in crap. Deep stack, small blinds= great game. There is really no sense in setting yourself in before the turn at this game, of course there is a exceptions. I personally dont like to set myself in at all. If you dont have at least 500 dont play. You really need 500 with about 2000 in your pocket. I personally like to buy a stack or two of red and put a wad of cash behind it.

As for a new person getting run over, not be cocky, but if you set down with anyless then 200 Ill push you around. If the right people are there(labor day, trust me they will be there.) you will need to out card the whole table to stand a chance. That being said there will probably be more then one game going. If you can stay off the main game your chances are much better. The stacks will be lower and you can make something happen with 75-150 dollars.

jerome am i missing something here? if i sit down with 100bbs how in the world r u gonna push me around with your 20000000000000bb stack? u effectively only have a 100bb stack against me, where does your stack give u extra leverage?

as to the op the games there are wild and highly profitable. i would buy in for about 300-500 if u r comfortable with it. people will give u plenty of chances to stack off, just like in every other live low limit no limit game in america. good luck.

I guess you are missing something.......I cant find the words to explain it but let me think about it and I will get back to you.

I has to do with draws and the money you have or lack of money. Give me a day to explain it I think you will like it.
