Pulling out some old sigs of mine:

"The nearest I can make it out, 'Love your Enemies' means, 'Hate your Friends'." -- Benjamin Franklin

"I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left." - Margaret Thatcher

"Distinctions by race are so evil, so arbitrary and insidious that a state bound to defend the equal protection of the laws must not allow them in any public sphere." -- Thurgood Marshall

"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it." -- Albert Einstein(?)

And, something funny I saw on the WPT last night:

"That's poker. I'm tired of saying it, but that's poker." -- TJ Cloutier

Some of my favorite quotes:

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein

In matters of principle, stand like a rock; in matters of taste, swim with the current. - Thomas Jefferson

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned. - Buddha

And some gambling related ones so this isn't too far off-topic:

I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it. - Thomas Jefferson

Dear Lord, help me to break even. I need the money. - The Loser's Prayer

Loose limps sink chips - Paul Phillips

This sounds a hell of a lot like the way Feynman viewed things.

Mine would probably have to be when Bukowski wrote, "Piss on the sun if you want, but leave the good women alone."

(From 'A Poem for Swingers' in the posthumous collection 'Open All Night.')

...or another Bukowski poem from the same book, Hymn from the Hurricane, where he said, "...and what I also learned was that something once said could quickly become untrue."

In the realm of music, I turn to Shane MacGowan or Tom Waits in my darkest hour.

Here's a good one from Hegel (from his younger days, before
he decided the Prussian state was the pinnacle of human society...)

"...the state is something purely mechanical. There is no [spiritual] idea of a machine Only what is an object of freedom may be called 'idea.' Therefore we must transcend the state! For every state must treat free men like cogs in a machine. And this is precisely what should not happen; hence, the state must perish."

Probably not a real conversation starter, I guess.
