Diversity in Televised Poker
While there is still not much diversity in poker, I would say that African-Americans are making some tremendous leaps and bounds in the televised poker industry. There's news of Moneymaker possibly adopting a Nigerian child, as well.
So, I'm interested in your opinions on this matter. His play, brilliant in your opinion? |

Re: Diversity in Televised Poker
I could grab a homeless man from behind the local Walmart, teach him for 2 weeks and he'd play better than Darden!

Re: Diversity in Televised Poker
Don't box Ellix in as just the best Black player. He's very well the best player, PERIOD. I'm sick and tired of you people putting labels on the worlds very best all around players like Annie Duke and Ellix Powers as only being good "woman" or "black" players. This power could is as good as it gets!

rant
I'm sorry, but I've always felt that people discussing "diversity" - whether in the workplace, a community, a sport, or yes, poker - is the height of ridiculousness.
If a black guy or an Asian guy or purple guy with 2 left elbows wants to play poker, he will. There is no need for special programs to make sure that something is diversified. It's like that hub-bub a few years ago over TV shows not having enough people of color. Network TV shows are not there to reflect society. Their purpose is not to make sure everyone under the Rainbow of America is represented. There purpose is to sell soap. Period. If the marketing execs determined that having more black people - or yellow, or brown, or gay, or Russian, or whatever - would get more people to watch their shows, and thus sell more soap, I guarantee you you would see that happen. America is about making money. The color of the country is not white, it is green. It's like all this crap about the NFL not having any black executives. Their argument goes, "well, if 60 percent of the NFL is black and 15 percent of the country is black, the NFL front offices should reflect this diversity." Um...why? That's like me saying that since the country is (let's say) 65% white that all NFL teams - and NBA and baseball, etc. - should be 65% white, right? I mean, that's reflecting the diversity of our country, isn't it? Forget about the best man making the team, we've got to make sure 2 out of the starting five for the Chicago Bulls are white. Do you see how stupid this all is? Does anyone really think the owners of NFL teams are making million dollar decisions that will affect their business based on the color of someone's skin??? That's absurd. And you know what? Even if they were doing that, it's their right! The NFL is a private conglomerate of corporations. If they are stupid enough to choose a lesser qualified candidate simply because he's white, let them! They will soon see their product suffer as a result, won't they? THAT'S why it's absurd to think they are doing this. They aren't that stupid. I'm tired if all this political correctness. It's ridiculous. Haev a nice day. |

Re: rant
I call bull. Being anti-PC became PC a long, long time ago. So what's your explanation for situations like the NFL? Here are some reasons people give for not hiring people:
"He just gave me a bad vibe" "His style just doesn't jibe with mine" Here's an often-given reason for hiring someone: "He reminds me of me when I was that age" This is a disadvantage to certain groups. Do you see why? |
