Default 3-bet the Turn and River, or just Call?

10-Person $5/$10 Limit Hold'em on PartyPoker

Hero's UTG, Villian is UTG +1

Hero has A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Hero raises , Villian calls, 3 folds, LP calls, 2 folds, SB calls, BB calls.

Flop: Q [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] T [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

SB and BB check, Hero bets, Villian raises , LP folds, SB calls, BB folds, Hero 3-bets, Villian caps , SB calls, Hero calls.

Turn: 4 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

SB checks, Hero bets, Villian raises , SB folds, Hero calls.

River: 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Hero bets, Villian raises , Hero calls.

As I played the hand, I was putting Villian on either QQ, TT, or QT. If he's got QQ or TT, he probably would have 3-bet preflop, so my gut says he's got QT for 2 pair that I can beat. Should I have pushed harder on the turn and river, or did I play it correctly?

With the SB along for the ride, did you consider checkraising the turn? Villain has given every indication that he will bet. You're certainly going to showdown; the only question is for how much.

If you can put the villain on a range of hands where he would call two cold UTG+1 with QT preflop, then I think you're ahead often enough to be more aggressive here. Is he that loose, or is QT just wishful thinking? To me, it sure seems like he's playing TT and not QT, but I don't have your reads. If I think he's that LAG then I raise the turn; I check/call the river if he caps; if he just calls the turn then I bet/call the river.

Of course, that's just me; I'm interested in reading other replies here to see how wrong I am.

This hand is bothering me. Mainly because the call preflop and then the action post flop. Do we have any stats on this guy? What is his VPIP, agression, etc.? QT if he likes to mess around preflop and is generally a fish but the same goes for the other possibilities: 44, TT, QQ & KK.

Your ahead of QT & KK but behind TT, QQ, Q4, 44. I'll laugh if he had Q4 or 44 but my guess is he had TT.

Sorry, don't have any stats on Villian. This was the 6th or 7th hand of the session and I had never played against Villian before.

I would've played this exactly the same way you did.

Someone mentioned a c/r on the turn to trap the SB. But I'd save that play for a dryer board than this. If SB called the 2 bets on the flop, he's likely on a draw and you leading the turn could've priced him out.

I think you're ahead most of the time here. Most players would reraise QQ preflop, so I think that's less of a possibility than TT. QT is entirely possible, I see morons cold calling QT all the time. 44 is statistically less likely, but possible. I'd also include KQ and AQ in villian's range.

I wouldn't go for a 3bet on the turn or river. Villian has pumped every chance he's had, I'd give that some respect.

The only thing I find strange is bet-call, bet-call on the last two streets.

You aren't sure if you're winning or losing this one ... so pick one. If you think you're winning more than half the time, you would 3-bet the turn and lead the river ... if you think you're not ahead, you are only going to check-call the river.

I'm not sure which line is right - but yours is, as they say in backgammon, not thematic.
