Knockout Blackjack by Olaf Vancura and Ken Fuchs is a very good beginners guide to card counting. If he decides to get a little more serious, he should read Blackjack Attack by Don Schlesinger.

I'd recommend Stanford Wong's Basic Blackjack, its got the BS for every conceivable variation of the game and some stuff on warps and tells that can help a non counter in the right game, as well as being a very funny book with lots of anecdotes from various games Stanford and his friends have been involved in.

I highly recommend Blackjack Bluebook II by Fred Renzey. It starts out with basic strategy, then moves on to some strategies that are not near the amount of work that card counting is, but still lower the house advantage (not to the point of giving you an edge, though).
