Default Blackjack: Splitting 10s?

Disclaimer:
I'm just learning proper strategy for this game.

Every strategy chart I've seen says not to split tens vs anything. It seems like you would want to split tens against something like dealer 4,5,6.

Can someone explain how (or even if) this is correct?

splitting tens against bad dealer cards still make money, but not as MUCH as standing on a pat 20. that's why you don't split tens.

if you're counting cards then there are some indexes for when to split, but this is somewhat rare.

So its more of a 'bird in the hand' strategy? You've already got a great advantage against the dealer, so don't screw it up.

Gotcha. Thanks.

Yes. If you split against a 6, each hand wins an average of about .29 bets, for a total of 0.58. If you stand, you win an average of 0.70, an improvement of 0.12 bets. Splitting gives up as much as the house advantage on about 25 normal hands.

Splitting tens is +EV against all dealer upcard. However, standing on 20 is more +EV for all dealer upcards. By splitting tens, your are putting more money at risk and reducing your EV.

BTW, if you are counting cards, splitting tens against dealer 4-6 becomes profitable at sufficiently high positive counts. However, it is a dead giveaway that you are counting if you are otherwise playing correctly, and suddenly splt tens with a big bet out.
