Default Overbetting mid PP\'s on 1 overcard boards...

*set the stage*

You hold 88 in MP...folded to you. You decide to pop it up to 3x, and get the BB to call.

Flop comes Q-6-2 rainbow

BB checks to you, and you decide to make a big bet. BAM! Re-raise all in.

I swear. I lose more money to this than ANYTHING in MTT's. EVERY time I make this move it backfires.

Sometimes I call, sometimes I don't depending on reads and how pissed I am when it happens.

Is there a better way to play this?
Should I check it?
Should I call the re-raise?
Am I the only one who gets this like everyday?
Is he playing this incorrectly? PERSONALLY I don't check top pair when it's a Q in this situation...but maybe I'm just wrong.

how about not making a big bet, and just making the normal bet you would if you hit the flop.

I often find myself in this same situation and don't know what to do. A number of times when I've called the all-in, I find that the blind is playing his own mid PP (5s - 9s), and probably just put me on painted overcards. I think that my big (pot size) bets on the flop make the blind think that I'm just trying to bully him out of the pot (especially if he's a short stack and I'm average-large), so he calls, thinking his mid PP is good.

The toughest decisions that I face in these situations is when the blind is a big stack, you're an average-shorter stack, and so you have no idea if you're just being bullied, or if the blind actually has something. In that case, I just call if I'm committed, but really think it over if I can still walk away without being totally crippled.

I don't necessarily mean big bet...

I just mean a normal bet. 2/3 - the whole amount of the pot.

Not sure what you mean here, MLG. Are you suggesting limping preflop or checking post flop.

no, Im suggesting a half-pot bet postflop. If you get raised fold (almost always unless you have a strong strong read).

Heads up, middle pair is usually good, I highly doubt you will be played back at everytime you make this move.

I mean, I usually limp with small pockets from ep, and when Im heads up with the bb, I always bet if he checks it to me, and this is a pretty successful move, and just saying that you got played back 1 or 3 hands is wrong.
