I don't buy Phil's reasoning for the raise, but the move is probably the best among tough alternatives. The rainbow and paired flop doesn't help a drawing hand, so Unbluffable is either way ahead of a bluff, or way behind to a pair of Kings or trip 5s. (Given the pre-flop weakness on Phil's part, it would make kings less likely.)

If Phil just check-calls with nothing on the board to draw to, that looks suspicious, and he might not get any more chips from Unbluffable. If Phil reraises all-in, that'll show maximum strength and chase Unbluffable away. Phil's move to reraise the minimum continues the guise that he's just representing a hand, and makes the bluff read more plausible.

It's bad luck for Phil that the two-outer hit, but it's not necessarily bad play by the opponent either.

i think he played it fine. i mean, his opponent hit his 2 outer and beat him. if the villian was a chip leader, i can see playing this, but i would think the minraise was kinda suspicious.

It's a case of either he'll never learn, or he's riding his one-trick pony til it drops.

His pony has dropped. Rigor has set in but he's still beating away at it.

We all have hideous beat stories. Yesterday I lost |$too much| with Queens-full-of-Aces on the flop to a runner runner Royal Flush.. we also all know there is a cross-section of poker players who cannot handle the variance without blowing up.

I'm just glad that most pros can let it go. It would be horrible to have five or six PH running around out there.

OK, Phil, no more sour grapes! You’re in the penthouse suite at the Radisson Resort and Casino in beautiful Aruba. Your books, DVDs, and new “365 tips” calendar (jfturner.com) are flying off the shelves. You have a good amount of fortune and fame — nine World Series of Poker (WSOP) titles. Why, then, do you have to lose it, and act like a jerk, after taking a bad beat? Why leap out of your chair, with your arms flailing, and utter, “What the hell is going on here?” And then, worse yet, say to your opponent, “How could you have played that hand so poorly?”

Once more, I’m embarrassed by my own conduct, even more so because this is the UltimateBet.com Poker Classic in Aruba, and I’m an ambassador for UB. I should have said, “Nice hand, sir,” and calmly walked away from the table. I should have shown the class that a WSOP champion ought to show. But, I am, after all, the Poker Brat!

Wow, Phil managed to shill his books, DVD's, calendar, Ultimatebet, and his brand name (oops I mean nickname) - all in the 1st 2 paragraphs. That's some pretty good shilling right there.

Wow! Phil was beaten by a two-outer on the turn. I bet that has never happened to him (or anyone else) before. No wonder he wrote an article about it!

Does any educated person believe anyone is buying his books, dvds and calendars, let alone that they are "flying off the shelves?" Does he ever get knocked out of a tournament because that is the variance of tournaments, or is it always a bad beat, being card dead, or some other thing that makes him unlucky.

It bothers me that the uneducated people think that he is great because of his constant shilling, his inappropriate antics and behavior and his continuous self promotion. Anyone who has played with him is more than happy to have him back in the game, which says one thing. He doesn't win. I applaud him for accepting 50 grand for a night of entertaining people, but please, please, come play in my game, I could use the money.

Phil didn't give all the details of the hand, but I don't see how he was justified in calling the blind of 300 seemingly out of position or even that fairly significant preflop raise with a stack of 6.2k and such a mediocre holding. He said he would get paid if he hit, but I don't think that is justification, based on his shortish stack size.

Unbluffable

[/ QUOTE ]

Phil said the guy was unbluffable, he never mentioned patently stupid. This guy gets check raised on the flop by Phil, big laydown, HelmOUth who calls a raise preflop and now checkraises the preflop raiser with a King on board and he calls with an under pair. Oh.. the heck with it. I like your analysis Howard, so there...

The point of this discussion was that trying to prevent giving a free card was not in my opinion a good reason
to raise here. There may be good reasons but that wasn't one of them...and I hate giving free cards.
