I have never heard of this insurance idea before, but obviously it has its problems. I may still try this next time I'm at the casino -- don't know if 'side bets' like this are frowned upon though.

INsurance used to be standard around NL games. There is a good discussion about it in Super System. One of the biggest problems with it (that I didn't mention above) if someone keeps hearing that they are a 4:1 dog they will quit gettign all the money in as a 4:1 dog.
