baseball managers
are retarded!
so i have the tigers +215 tonight and its tied in extra innings. #9 hitter leads off with a single, bringing up polanco. whats he do? of course. the sacrifice. WTF! let the guy hit you ass clown. i know its over after that. 1st and 2nd nobody out for the angels now. idiots

what was he doing with 2 outfielders? its a pretty obscure aspect of baseball game theory, i have no idea about it. but this doesnt seem wise at all. also, walking the bases full. no. bad idea. especially, especially when the relievers out there are not premium guys. also its probably a mistake when the guy youre bringing up is manny ramirez, i dont care if hes not having a stellar year. edit, more on point one im sure the chance of cutting a ball off that the 5th infielder provides is much smaller than the chance of a fly ball. remember, there was a man on 3rd with one out, and if there are two outfielders it does not have to be much of a fly to get him in. im pretty sure that when they switched to the 5 man infield there was a runner on 1st with 1 out. i would think if you are going to the 5 man infield you would want the double play to be in order. just seems like macha screwed it up bigtime.

I think the idea for the 5 infielders/2 outfielders goes something like this:
infielders have to play in, to prevent the runner from scoring at home. They cover less ground this way. Despite the slightly smaller field, the decreased distance from home plate gives them less time to react to the ball. Most fly balls to the outfield are going to win the game anyways. The outfielders don't have to play as deep, so they don't have to cover as much ground. The 5th infielder, playing around 2nd base should cover all shallow flies to center that could have stopped the guy on 3rd from tagging anyway. He might actually have been on to something. Walking Ortiz to get to Manny though was a HUGE sign of respect. I'm also certain it was a terrible move. Who else in the league would get walked in that position with Manny Ramirez on deck?
