And unforgiven shouldn't win. The Searchers should, obviously.

One of the most visually stunning movies I've ever seen but a bit too hokey and racist for my taste.

I'm just shocked it took 30+ posts for someone to mention The Wild Bunch.

"Hud" is one of my favorite movies ever, but I've never even thought of it as a western.

If Hud would qualify, what about Grapes of Wrath?

[/ QUOTE ]

or Coogan's Bluff?

Yes, this was a major oversight. Good looking out.

My favorite is Fistful of Dynamite (aka Duck You Sucker), but that does not have a chance since hardly anyone has seen it.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Paint Your Wagon.

Most of the great westerns have been mentioned already, I'll try to think of some that haven't.

Cheyenne Autumn (I've never seen it, but I heard it was good)
My Darling Clementine
Fort Apache
Support Your Local Sherrif

I know there are more, but I just can't think of them right now. As an aside, I was just thinking the other day "Sweede needs to do a western poll and mystery movie poll". You should really break this up by decade or into 20 or 25 year blocks. At one point 25% of all US films produced were westerns, it really is the most well developed film genre there is. I would personally have a very hard time picking between say "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and "Unforgiven". There are just too many great westerns to group them all together, and you will get a lot of bias towards recent films I think if you dont segregate them. (Most people here have probably seen "TGTBATU", but I bet less than have have seen "The Wild Bunch" or "Once Upon a Time in the West".)

For me, this will be the toughest of these polls yet.

Edit - I'm not saying Support Your Local Sherrif was great per se, but it was decent, and pretty good for its era. Also, I didn't see any James Garner films listed, and he did tons of westerns.

The finalists have to be: "Red River," "The Searchers," "The Wild Bunch" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

ummm, no. G/B/U should definitely make final 4, and maybe Unforgiven. I would axe liberty valance and red river to make room for those two. Man, there are too many great westerns.

Swede, You realize that all these ignorant kids that haven't seen most of the good old westerns will just ruin this poll like they did the others?

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is excelent. I can't believe we are 50 posts in and nonoby has mentioned The Treasure of the Sierra Madre which makes my Top 5.
