A flop raise might not chase anyone out

It'll chase out 4-5 outers that I'd rather not stick around.

The more I think about it, the more I think I should have raised. However, I'll try to rationalize it anyway:

By the time the decision gets to me, the pot is 12SB. If I raise, the very next player is getting 7:1. UTG+2 cold-called Hero preflop, and 7:1 is pretty close to what he would need to call with a five-outer. I would be incredibly surprised if MP1 didn't call, making the pot larger. If even just MP1 calls, now SB is getting 8:1, plus the assumed call that would come from UTG. Also, if I raise, and I get a cold call from one of these players, I have no idea if one of them holds a queen. If the turn appears safe, I lead out again, and get called by that queen.

Now let's say I just call. If someone has a queen with a decent kicker, the pot probably gets raised. I know at that point that my 9s are no good, and I need to hit my set. If it doesn't get raised and an apparent safe card comes on the turn, raising UTG's bet would make things much more expensive for the rest of the field. If another overcard comes, I can lay down having only lost a SB.

If my hand is that vulnerable, I have no idea where I stand yet (aside from thinking there's a good chance I have UTG beat), there's a very good chance my raise will get called by one, probably two players, and waiting for a safe turn card (which is the only way I'm continuing with my hand anyway) to make it more expensive for the others to stay in, is a call that horrible?

As the one fellow said, calling in this situation is rarely good. That is, if you have made hand, and the pot is large, and someone bets, if you're hand is too good to fold, then raise. That's a safe line.

With a large pot, knocking someone out who would have beaten you had you not raised is very important.

PF OK.

Flop bad. You have to raise here to try and drive out others.

Turn easy, raise raise raise. River fine.

The only thing I would have done different would have been raising on the flop.

off topic, but trying to put utg on a hand here is quite a task.

I think the better line would be to raise this flop after UTG's bet. The reason I would do this is your going to make the field call two cold and you could get some of your opponents to fold. The pot is big, so protect it with a raise.

I like the turn and river.
