Default classic fit shirts

I bought a couple collared shirts at the gap last week. I noticed that they were classic fit but I didn't know what that meant. Apparently, classic fit means that the shirt is longer on the front and back and shorter on the sides.

How does this design have any advantages?
Do you only wear it tucked in or under a sweater?
