I'm pretty sure this is all the result of one terrible bad beat that scarred the guy for life:

in the neighborhood article:

"Even if you think that you are a better card player than most in that group, the chances are good that at least one or two players in that group will cheat. You will get dealt four of a kind and then just happen to get creamed by a player who has a higher four of a kind"

in the online article:

"The cards could be rigged in any which way to assure that you will lose quicker. They can easily rig any hand. For instance you could have four kings on the flop but a software program player gets a fourth ace at the river to beat you."

next time I flop four kings I'm just gonna fold
