QQ vs. AK
2/5 NL on PokerRoom... I've got around 850 in front of me, villain has 350. I'm UTG with QQ and raise to 20... folded to villain in MP who raises to 75, everyone folds back to me. Immediately I put him on AK based on the size of the reraise.
Flop comes 234 rainbow, what I was hoping for. Now at this point do I bet and get him to drop the hand or check with the intention of raising him? I decided to check and he bets 100. That pretty much confirms my AK suspicion and I reraise to 300, which puts him all in. He doesn't take more than 2 seconds to call... turn is a blank, and river is the dreaded A, and he turns over AK. Of course everyone berated him for calling the reraise but I'm wondering if I should have come out betting so he couldn't pot commit himself or whatever stupid logic he used to call that bet. Any thoughts? |

Re: QQ vs. AK
What a bad beat! Online poker is rigged!
At least you were correct on your read. Way to pinpoint him on precicely AK, thats amazing! |

Re: QQ vs. AK
Umm - You want him to commit himself on the flop drawing to 6 outs - You played it well.

Re: QQ vs. AK
I wasn't commenting on this hand actually - my bad - I was strictly commenting on AK v QQ after a non A or K flop - you are correct - I didn't even look at the board.
My point stands though, he's 63% to win - I want people commiting themselves when I'm that far ahead. |

Re: QQ vs. AK
To expand the math a bit, the guy had correct odds to call.
There's a bit over $150 in the pot preflop. Then, hero checks, this guy bets $100, and hero raises to $300. So at the time he's faced with (presumably) a $200 bet to call all-in on the flop, there's already $550 in the pot. The villan's getting 550-to-200 pot odds. With 10 outs on the flop he only needs approximately 1.6-to-1 odds to make the call correct. |

Re: QQ vs. AK
So would I have been better off betting instead of checking and reducing his pot odds?

Re: QQ vs. AK
Your opponent played it pretty much how I wouldve played AA or KK.

Re: QQ vs. AK
Not necessarily. If you put him on AK you could have smooth-called his flop bet with the intention of pushing if no A,K, or 5 shows up. This reduces his odds to about 4-to-1 on each street. Assuming the turn is a blank, that gives him pot odds of 350-to-200 to call a 4-to-1 bet.
EDIT: That's assuming you KNOW he's going to bet $100 with his AK, and not check behind. EDIT 2: It also assumes you automatically check/fold if one of the aforementioned cards shows up. |
