Default TD hand in the middle of a rush

I'm on a rush, I've won 5 of the first 10 pots at a full 6-handed table, many without showdown.

Then this hand comes up:

I have 97654 and open raise on the button.

The BB a bad loose player calls.

I'm not sure he's fully aware of how this game works, but regardless.

I drop the 9 and draw a deuce. I did think about standing pat the whole way and hoping the 9 holds up against an unreasonable but not ridiculous starting hand, but he will stick around for a few draws so I'm goin for the 8, however rough.

Check-bet-call. He drops 2, I stand pat, check-bet-call.

He drops one, I stand pat, check-bet-call.

My jaw drops as he shows A7643 and the chips slide his way.

Apparently I'm playing A-5.

That happens to me when I switch to 2-7...more than once, too. Sometimes I have an ace, sometimes I have a straight.

fwiw im not entirely sure the action went exactly that way, but the story is supposed to serve as a humourous anecdote in that I won a bunch of pots without knowing what the game was.

I think everyone does this eventually.

My personal best was "scooping" a pot by making a pair of aces on the 5th or 6th in stud (which I was pretty sure was stud/8 until some guy started berating my starting hand).

TY table captain, you probably saved me $50.

I lost a big pot this way last night at a DC table. I thought it was stud/8, made a wheel, and started jamming. Unfortunately I was up against two flushes and the game was stud hi.

Haven't made the A-5/2-7 mistake yet, though, since I rarely play A-5.

Heh. This happened to me last night. I was playing A-5 TD on UB and someone just sits down on our 6 handed game. He posts and I raise drawing to a235x. Only he calls and draws 1. I bet he calls. He stands pat and I caught a 6 to stand pat also. He stands pat and calls all the way down.

Showdown:
Opponent: KQJT9
Me: 6532A

Needless to say we had to explain he was playing a-5 low after the hand...

I have some sympathy for the people who sit down and do this.

But why do they usually draw to or show such bad hands? (Small two pair, unimproved pair of aces, drawing one to three queens, etc.) At least your example was a decent high hand, and he had odds to draw to an OESD on the first round (4.5:1).

Something similar happened to an opponent in a TD game. I had position and I had a good hand - I forget what exactly, but after the first draw I had an 8 and he was still drawing two so I stayed pat and kept betting and he kept calling.

After the last draw he check-raised me and all I could think was, did he draw two cards and make a 7? Well, only one more bet so I have to call and when I do villain turns over...

Quad Kings with a Jack kicker.

Unsure of what to do, I just typed "nh" and villain quickly left without a word.

I know this isn't the point, but I'm pretty sure you should ditch the six and draw the two. With 7654, you've got four outs at a deuce, and four outs at the hand you started with. Standing pat would be better than drawing one, here.
