Re: A few $10 wines
Hess makes good wine throughout their range; some of the Hess Collection wines are outstanding. I also like the Gloria Ferrer though am not a big fan of the Piper Sonoma. The Rancho Zabaco Zins (made by Gallo, but so what?) are good and Columbia Crest tends to be reliable as well.
Safeway, though? Even though it's nearby, their selection has been shrinking, at least at my local stores, nor are their prices very good. In SF, how about The Wine Club and/or BevMo? |

Re: A few $10 wines
I'm a couple of blocks from The Wine Club (great!) and K&L (excellent!). I buy from both of those places, and the staff there can recommend something great in any style and price range. I grocery shop at Safeway, though, and they have a pretty good selection of good reasonably priced wines.

Re: A few $10 wines
agree w/ most of this. I like hess wines pretty well and agree w/ you and ElD on the others, except columbia crest. I had a dirt cheap cab from them recently that was good cheap wine, but had a nasty merlot. I am becoming leery of washington reds the more I try. Some I like of course tho.
In the 10 range I have found a bunch of wines I like, usually california blends. Marietta, the menage a trois from folie a deux, the rosenblum vintner mix zin, stuff like that. Or some of the australians. The cheap washington ones are getting pushed down the list. |
