Default Fancy Play Syndrome

I thought I was being overly fancy checking my set on a 2 spade flop. I quickly learned that my play was nothing compared to this fancy-pants.

Whats the point? That he checked and then was willing to put his stack in on TPTK? Weird.

I was just surprised and may have posted this to quickly. I truly believe he was trying to trap me with TPTK by checking the flop, which I am seeing more and more.

I apologize for the lack of content.

I agree with the Pooh-Bah. Nothing unusual. The opponent played the hand badly, you called him down and punished him.

But look at it differently. You got lucky and flopped top set, but were potentially vulnerable to a flush draw, and risked giving your opponent a free card on the turn which could have potentially beaten you and cost you a lot of chips.

What happens if your opponent is holding suited spades and a spade comes on the turn? You potentially may have gone from big leader to big dog with only 10 outs. If your opponent flushes the turn and bets big into you, or worse even semi-bluffs big into you, then you may have no choice but to muck your set or make a bad call. If you are like most players, you're not going to muck top set under any circumstances and you may pay the price for it.

Back to the beginning, the hand worked out okay for you. But was the giving the free card worth the risk?

TPTK is a monster HU most times. I often check AK HU in cash games to milk people when A or K flops. Tourneys don't really call for slowplaying IMO but thats another thread...

This is very, very standard. Nice concealed brag on something that isn't even really that cool. You got all his chips. Great. Want a cookie?

I love your flop check on a QT7, 2 flush board almost as much as I love your 1/10 pot bet on a QT87, 2 flush board. Which is to say, you really really deserved to lose to A9o.

Not sure I could have lost to A9o; however, point taken. The minimum bet was stupid. My point in the OP was...I was playing stupid...lucky for me I was not the biggest idiot.

I'd call it the old "I've got a girl's name and don't know what to do so I'll push the MinBet button, please don't raise" bluff inducer. And it worked perfectly...except I think a re-raise there (instead of call) would have won the pot without giving another chance for him to outdraw. Of course, being results driven, we see that it worked out better the other way.
