Default Tipping for a Room Upgrade

I was just having this discussion with somebody at work. Neither of us have ever tried it, so it was all pretty much speculation.

Can you slip the guy a $100 at check-in and get a nice room upgrade? How nice of an upgrade would you get for this, and would $50 do the job, or would $200 result in a significantly better room? Is it easier or more likely to happen at a casino like Bellagio/Wynn, or Luxor/Paris? I'm assuming it would be easier during the week/winter than on a weekend/summer.

Easiest time would be during the week in the summer.

You usually get a room upgrade for a $20 tip (if they are available, if they aren't available, then the amount doesn't matter).

If you want to tip $200 for a $50 upgrade, then you deserve a kick in the nuts.

I had a $20 in my hand when I asked about a rollaway at Mirage. First she said $30 then she said she would give it to me free, so I saved $130 plus tax.

I'm sure it depends on what kind of upgrade you're talking about. My buddies were just wondering the same thing. (we're coming to town in 2 weeks-staying at the mirage) In our case there's 3 of us in a normal 2 bed room for 5 nights with another guy coming in for just the weekend. We play rock-paper-scissors for the bed. We were wondering if an extra $100 at checkin would get us a suite or combo room with 4 beds for our 5 night stay?

The long time standard has been $20.
Give me the other $80 if you are so eager to get rid of it.

...staying at the mirage ...

[/ QUOTE ]The tip the registration clerk for an upgrade thing does not work at the high end hotels. Besides, the rooms at the mirage tower are almost all the same and no way are you getting a bungalo. You might get a better view for $20.
