A bit off topic (well not really), but can anyone tell me what whip stands for, everyone who talks baseball here keeps mentioning it as one of the most important pitching stat...

thanks guy

Walks and hits per inning pitched.

sublime, Burnett isn't coping with beanball-shell shock. If you want to accurately compare the two, I think you need to account for Clement's pre- and post-injury numbers. I'll take Burnett.

well, i dont think his being hit in the head matter much, but ill post a few game logs anyways to prove it.

3 games before being hit in head (CWS/NYY/TEX)

16.4 IP's
7 HR's
7 BB
18K's

3 games AFTER being hit with line drive (KC/TEX/LAA)
18 IP's
0 HR
7 BB
16 K's

wow, he actually pitched better after being hit! maybe hes psychic and KNEW he was going to be hit in the head, so he was suffering from PRE traumatic stress disorder. he faced better hitting teams on the whole prior to being hit, but the stats still prove the line drive was not a factor.

Clement 4.57 ERA
Burnett 3.44 ERA
Therefore Clement = Burnett

that's the problem with basic, old school stats. they give you this one compact stat that really doesn't tell the whole story. stats like ERA and batting average are good outlining stats, in that usually extreme cases (0.90 era, .355 BA) they are not wrong. guys with those type of stats are going to be great players.

when using them to compare two players, its almost useless and in this case maybe even counterproductive.

AJ burnett played his home games in a pitchers park in front of a very good defense while clement played in a hitters park (a hitters division) and an awful defense (not to mention a bullpen that came equipped with gasoline and matches). take them both out of their current/past situations and give them equal defenses and opponents and the results are more than likely going to VERY close.

clement is signed for 9.5m the next two years and burnett for 11m the next two years fwiw.

[/ QUOTE ]

Burnett is overpaid, I am willing to admit that. However that is irrelevant when arguing the merits of Burnett or the Jays.

I'm just glad the Cardinals didn't bite for AJ's absurd 5/55 deal.

SMALL SAMPLE SIZE

He got hit July 26th, The ASG was July 12th
The pre and post ASG splits look like this
W L ERA GS CG IP BB K's
10 2 3.85 18 1 117.0 35 97
3 4 5.72 14 0 74.0 33 49

Looks like a pretty big difference to me. BTW The post ASG stats include the following three starts pre line drive.

JUL 16 NYY 2.2 5 6 6 1 5 4
JUL 21 @CWS 6.0 6 4 4 3 2 5
JUL 26 @TB 2.1 4 3 3 0 0 2 This was the game he got injured.

Not buying it. Obviously we're looking at a small sample size but three of his worst starts came before he got injured. Maybe the injury played a factor but there's no way it's solely responsible.

However, the difference between Clement and Burnett is way overstated.

Well you proved me wrong.
Jack I think only one of Clement's bad starts because the start against Tampa was the one where he got injured.
