Here are some rules that have worked really well for me. Not saying I don't have other rules that still need adjustments....

1. Never, ever bet on a road fave that is playing their 2nd (or 3rd) road game in a row. Stay away. You'll be happier in the long run.

2. Never bet the moneyline favorite.

3. Never fade Big Al. You may like the other side of his shoe in that week, but just lay off it instead.

Using these rules, I have kept my losses to a small fortune instead of a total disaster.
