Default reason for a cap in limit games ?

it is commonplace that there is a cap of 4 bets per round of a limit game. Why?

I think it would change the game if there was no cap. Even if the cap was 5 bets I think it would change the way many of the hands are played that reach a cap during a betting round.

It is simply because if 2 players are raising, and 1 is trapped in the middle, he would caught having to call an unspecified number of bets or fold. Plus, collusion would be much much easier. If there are only 2 players left, often there is no cap, because there is noone caught in the middle.

Many northern California card rooms play with a five-bet cap in Limit, and no cap when heads up.

I think someone already pointed out the answer. Trapping is the reason betting is capped. You could have 2 individuals pumping the pot and trapping a 3rd individual which is ....criminal.

Also, slightly different then trapping, if there was no cap some hands would almost turn into no-limit hands if 2 people have the nut straight with a flush draw and top set trapped in between.

I don't think this is a really big deal. If it go to three bets or more, the non-nut hands would certainly start think their hands are no good.

The only reason for a cap is to prevent collusion via whipsawing in multiway pots. Thats why the cap is gone when headsup (live anyway).

the other reason that theres a cap (on line, im' talking) is that if there wasn't, people would run out of money way to quickly, and the pokersites don't want that, especially since there is a cap on the rake.
cheers.
