Default river play with a set (6 handed $400 NL)

Taking a shot at the Party 400 game, my usual game is the 100 NL (the $200 wait lists and general poor games have led me to this - just 1 table of 400 now and again while 3 tabling the 100s to cover the jump).

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $4 BB (6 max, 6 handed) converter

PT stats for UTG: 19 / 6 from about 30 hands, so seemingly tight and decent, no other reads.

Button ($244.5)
SB ($1120.4)
BB ($374)
UTG ($396)
MP ($251)
Hero ($592.2)

Preflop: Hero is CO with 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. SB posts a blind of $2.
UTG raises to $8, 1 fold, Hero calls $8, Button calls $8, SB (poster) calls $6, BB calls $4.

Flop: ($40) J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG bets $16, Hero calls $16, Button folds, SB folds, BB folds.

Turn: ($72) 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG bets $16, Hero raises to $100, UTG calls $84.

River: ($272) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG bets $272 (All-In), Hero ?

Is not rasing the flop inexcusable?

Given how I played it, what's the river play?

Thanks a lot.

Definitely raise the flop. Given the play, I put UTG on either A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] or A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]K [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. Obviously, you're ahead of one and not the other. Very difficult river decision, but I would call.

Definitely need to raise the flop. It really doesn't seem like the river is being bet for value here so you should call and expect to win more often than 1/3.

Whats wrong with the 200 games..are the 400 games better? My normal game is the 200 and they seem pretty good to me..am I way wrong?

With the Button and SB left to act I'd probably pot the flop almost expecting someone to call with a drawing hand.

I think you can call on the river profitably.

I don't play them, so you would know better than me how they are.

I just find the waiting lists to be annoyingly long and the avg pot sizes relatively small, and I had theorised that the people who get through the waiting list are likely to be more persistant and, on average, better players. Possibly not a valid assumption.

I have emailed Party asking why they don't open up some PL 6 handed games, to match the offerings at higher tables, but just got a standard response about having forwarded my request to the marketing dept.

I guess I'll rethink this if the consensus is there's nothing wrong with the 6 handed 200s.

Cheers,
vector

The way it stands I would call.

I also would have raised the flop to around 50. This allows you make a big turn bet and and knock off the gutshot straight draws.

Greed. I feared knocking out TP there, and told myself I would not be spewing chips if the turn was a spade, and accept the risk of killing my action if I was still good.

But in retrospect I'm aware this is crappy reasoning, and next time I'll raise the flop.

From his play in this hand, regardless of what he held, villain is not decent.

Raise the pot on the flop.

Call the river.
