Default shuffling

they say that on poker sites the cards are always being shuffled, that the next cards to come aren't predetermined as it is in a real deck of cards. if that's true, then the next time you kick yourself for folding pocket sevens online for 3 bets cold when the flop brings a seven, you might not have even seen the seven if you called. i know that this is a degenerage gambling mentality, but it's still interesting. as a degenerate.

thoughts?

I think I remember reading that with Party, the next card ARE predetermined, so your 7 would have flopped regardless of you folding or not. I could be wrong though, after all, I read it somewhere on 2+2

Statistically this shouldn't make any difference, but psychologically I'm more comfortable with a set deck. I play a lot of backgammon online, and RNG generators used for the dice means that your roll will be different if you pause a second or two seconds etc., but somehow that doesn't bother me as much as not having a set deck. I play mostly on UB, and from what I have read about their shuffling technology, the deck is constantly being shuffled.

I wonder if players at a casino would object if the dealer was shuffling the cards during every pause. I bet they would, but it wouldn't be much different than what the poker sites do.

Irrational, maybe, but humans aren't perfectly rational beasts (except maybe Sklansky)

Well, with the roll of dice, the continually shifting randomness is actually more accurate than, say, setting up a series of rolls at the start of the game. The outcome of a real die roll will be affected by insignificant variations, like throwing them slightly harder or softer, waiting a moment in your hand movement before letting go, etc.

I realize there is absolutely no difference whether the card deck is pre-established or randomly generated right there, but it does have a small, irrational effect on my perception of the game. As the OP said, knowing if I'd made my decision at a slightly different time would have changed the outcome (in a completely unknowable way) bothers me a little.

But, I learn to live with it!

I agree that it can lead to annoying (and dangerous) psychological quirks.

For instance, if I make an incorrect fold, but then villain hits his flush on the river anyhow, I think to myslef "Oh, thats OK". I no longer care so much that I played the hand wrong.

Knowing exactly what would have happened leads to results-orientated thinking, and I actively have to fight this sometimes.
