Where\'s the \"tells\" posts??
I've been reading for any "tells" posts, and I haven't found too many. The reason that I'm asking is because I'm in a tourney with a couple of buddies, and I want to show them who's boss
Could anyone give me an idea what to look for through their experiences? |

Tells are overrated. Learn more theory.

I agree. Tells are useless in my book without a sound understanding of theory.

Re: Where\'s the \"tells\" posts??
Read Caro's book, but realize that the 'standard' tell behavior he outlined has exceptions. Therefore, you have to gauge tells you see by the people at your table and the level of your table.
At low-mid levels (of ability and/or $) tells may be straightforward. At higher levels, you may see reverse tells (someone acting in a way that is opposite of the book to make you reach a wrong conclusion). For example, I played the other night at a table where an older guy (maybe 60-65) would thump his bet on the table. In the book, Caro would say he is bluffing. As in all tells discuused in Caro's book, the underlying motivation is either strength or weakness. I had called him preflop, but folded on the flop after he thumped his bet again. I decided this guy was actually strong and was going counter to the book, and NOT doing a reverse tell. He had the nut flush... The way I decided he was going counter to the book was based on two things. I was talking to him (we were in a tournament) about what we usually play and he said 3/6 at a different casino. So that means no reverse tell. I also determined he was a "Boss" type (from the new book "Beyond Tells" by James McKenna which I recommend reading after Caro's). So, therefore, he is the type to be authoritative. Reading tells are also good in "real life" away from the tables. For example, coming home from the cardbard one night I was a little tired. I tapped the back bumper of the car in front of me at a stop sign. The guy gets out holding his neck and just stares at me without talking (he's VietNamese). I didn't believe he had whiplash based on the speed I was going and also from his confrontative stare--plus the fact that he got out of the car period. There was no damage and the cop on the scene wrote that on his report for me. We gave each other the white guy nod and drove off leaving the malingering foreigner wondering what happened.
