Re: Best Book You\'ve Read Recently (Political/History/Non-Fiction)
I'm currently multi-tabling the following:
On Bull***t, by Harry G. Frankfurter. Yes, that's seriously the title - except without the asterisks. He's a philosophy professor at Princeton, so the book is not simply intended for yuks; it's an on-the-level philosophical inquiry into the rising tide of you-know-what in today's society. Alexander Hamilton, by Ron Chernow. I'll fess up that it's the audiobook version -- but at least it's unabridged! Thoroughly researched, and definitely not a reiteration of info contained in the several other Revolutionary-era nonfictions of late. Even if it veers toward hagiography at times, it's very engaging and enjoyable stuff. Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare, by Stephen Greenblatt. Fascinating and revelatory. Probably not for those who ain't much into Shakespeare. Super/System 2, by Doyle Brunson, et. al The Psychology of Poker, by Alan Schoonmaker These last 2: self-explanatory. |

Re: Best Book You\'ve Read Recently (Political/History/Non-Fiction)
I am slowly working my way through Shelby Foote's narrative history of the Civil War, it is excellent, taking the time to detail troop movements in each major battle and lots of minor skirmishes, and provides excellent biography of the officers and even some of the soldiers- It's been called the best history of the war for a layman (as opposed to a trained tactician), and i couldn't aggree more.
I've also been leafing through one of my favroites, "the Journals of Lewis and Clark" as edited by Bernard De Voto. I have a beautiful first edition that i'm destroying as i read it at least once a year. Also (i read lots of books at a time, slowly), I've been reading The Art of War again, and a book called "skid road" which is an informal history of Seattle, told through five short biographies of pivitol citizens. I'd highly reccomend it to any seattle area posters (i know there are many). |

That book did look interesting. Is it possible to get on paperback. It was a bit pricy in the store last time I went.
