Default Social Security - Anyone else see this email?

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving
a Social Security check every month (or will soon be) -- and then finding
that we are getting only 85% of the money we paid to the federal government
to "put away," you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which party took Social Security from an independent fund and put it in
the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratic-controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which party put a tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic party.

Q: Which party increased the tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic Party with Al Gore casting the deciding vote.

Q: Which party decided to give money to immigrants? immigrants? immigrants?
A: That's right, immigrants moved into this country and at 65 got SSI
(Social Security). The Democratic Party gave that to them although they
never paid a dime into it.

Then, after doing all this, the Democrats turn around and tell you the
Republicans want to take your Social Security. And the worst part about it
is, people believe it!

Any you believe this email, I presume?

If so, why? What reason do you have to believe some email that someone forwarded to you? Shouldn't you be the least bit sceptical? Maybe you could do a search and see if any of that is true?

I'm an immigrant and I've paid the maximum in Social Security Payroll tax for the last 5 years. I've been working for 7 years.

I'm also a citizen.

No need. The slanty eyes are enough for most to assume anyway, although the praise I get for my "perfect English" has diminished over the years.

Two of these are outright falsehoods and the other two are irrelevant.

[ QUOTE ]

Q: Which party put a tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic party.

[/ QUOTE ]

The tax on Social Security benefits were a part of the 1983 amendments which were signed into law by none other than Ronald Regan.

In case you don't believe me, here is a picture of Reagan signing the bill:

Here is a summary of the amendments:

http://www.ssa.gov/history/1983amend.html

Here is the relevant part:

[ QUOTE ]
Beginning in 1984, includes up to one-half of Social Security benefits as taxable income for taxpayers whose adjusted gross income, combined with half their benefits and any tax-exempt interest they may have exceeds $25,000 for a single taxpayer and $32,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly. Benefits received by married taxpayers filing separately are taxable without regard to other income. Appropriates amounts equal to estimated tax liability to the Social Security trust funds.

[/ QUOTE ]

Q: Which party decided to give money to immigrants? immigrants? immigrants?
A: That's right, immigrants moved into this country and at 65 got SSI
(Social Security). The Democratic Party gave that to them although they
never paid a dime into it.

[/ QUOTE ]

My God! Immigrants! Those lousy liberals!

The SSI program was signed into law by Richard Nixon on October 30th, 1972. It was a bipartisan effort.

All the facts are on the socialy security website.

The other two could be called true, but no republican administration or congressman has ever tried to change those practices.

To be fair, WC64 never said he believed the email just that he received it.

I get these things all the time and it usually takes only the slightest bit of checking to realize that they are nonsense.
