Default rules for betting in poker

in a B & M Nl tourny, is it legal for a player to take some chips into his hand (100 chips for example), move his hand into the middle of the pot, and then hold the chips an inch off the felt (so that it looks as though he's going to make 100 chip call/bet) and then announcing "raise" (over the 100 already in his hand)?

This depends on the rules in place for the tournament.

At one tournament I've played in at a local casino, they stipulate that only chips released into the pot count, forward motion means nothing. Thus, you can take chips and hover over the felt all you want.

The Poker Tournament Director's Association rule is:

"n NL or PL, when raising, a player must either put the amount of the raise out in one motion or state the raise amount. By stating the word raise, a player protects his right to raise, but the raise must be made in one additional motion unless he states the amount."

I see no problem with the move you describe. It's common to arrange the chips for a call and then annouce raise before committing them.

Regards,

T

yeah, you can raise like that. Just make sure you know WHEN to do it. Some rooms may have a "chips hit felt" rule and some may have a "hand left chips" rule (like chess). Some rooms *may* even use forward motion for this, rendering the OP raise incorrect.
