Re: Doyle fires back at Andy Beal
Of course Andy won't accept. Both sides have set up situations in which they feel they are the favorite. Andy wants to play such that the variance/skill equation favors him (playing high enough so that he can outlast the swings and his opponent can't), and the pros wants to play such that it favors them (such that swings are far less important and skill dominates).

Re: Doyle fires back at Andy Beal
Mr. Beal ought to take it upon himself to learn no-limit since stroking his ego seems to be his primary reason for playing (see his comments on "beating the best in the world"). Winning a major NL tourney will garner praise galore and will undoubtedly stroke his ego to his liking, no? Somebody write a letter to Cardplayer and try to sway him to do so.

Re: Doyle fires back at Andy Beal
I also want to play poker against the best in the world but I'm not rich so I'll write an open letter to Card Player and challenge the best cash game players:
* We'll play at my place @ 10pm, any friday. Forget about Vegas pros, I can't afford to fly to your hometown. * The game is limit no fold 'em hold 'em, $0.01/$0.02. You fold a hand, you pay me $10 * I get to choose who to play heads up against * In the event of a split pot, I automatically win the full pot because I make up the rules |

Re: Doyle fires back at Andy Beal
There isn't a site with info on Beal's high-stakes games against the Las Vegas pros. (A few discussion sites posted occasional bits of information and rumors, as often false as true.) In fact, until very recently everyone in the game had been trying, to varying degrees, to keep the game out of the news. I assume this was because Andy Beal is a pretty private person, plus the pros generally figure the people who play them for high stakes don't want their high-stakes poker interest publicized.
I just finished writing a book about Andy Beal and the Las Vegas pros. It will be out in Spring 2005. You'll see ads for it. Sorry to make you wait, but I promise it will be worth it. In answer to your questions, if I can be a little help, Beal plays heads up, though when he first started playing poker in Las Vegas in 2001, he played in some ring games. He actually played $15-30 and $80-160 on his first night in the Bellagio poker room. After that, he played $400-800, then at escalating limits at Table One: $1000-2000, 2000-4000, 3000-6000, 4000-8000. Before he started playing exclusively heads up, he played in a $10,000-20,000 ring game in March 2001. In the heads-up games, the top pros pooled their money, both so they could accommodate his interest in playing heads up while each getting a shot at what was originally pretty easy money, and so they could afford to play him as he continued increasing the stakes. The group has had been eight and fifteen members. His most frequent opponents have been Howard Lederer, Todd Brunson, Jennifer Harman, Chau Giang, Ted Forrest, Barry Greenstein, Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, David Grey, Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, and John Hennigan. |
