\"Yeah, I got a 4\" -- can he do that?
This is more a rules question, but also a really interesting situation.
$1000 max buy-in, $5/10 blinds. SB and BB are heads-up on the river. Each has around $800. Pot is about $400. Board is 8-2-2-4-2. SB bets $200. BB goes all in. SB asks, "you got a 4?" BB says "Yeah, I got a 4." SB thinks a while. BB says, "Here I'll show you," and turns the 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] face-up on the table. BB then taps the other card (still face down) and says, "Can't see this. This one is special." He then turns the 4 back face down. Question: is it legal for BB to expose one of his cards while the hand is live? Does this kill his hand? |

heads up this is fine
it does not kill the hand |

Re: \"Yeah, I got a 4\" -- can he do that?
this is cardroom specific. also, the rule might be different in live games and in tourneys. as a general rule, it's kosher live and not kosher in tourneys.

Re: \"Yeah, I got a 4\" -- can he do that?
yup, usually you can show in live games, and not in tournaments
probably a good idea to make sure you are allowed to show (if you are the type to show your cards during the hand) - wouldn't want a monster killed when he might have called and given you a huge pot |

Re: \"Yeah, I got a 4\" -- can he do that?
SB thinks and thinks and thinks, then calls and shows 84 for a full house 22288. BB turns over 42 for quad 2s.
Ouch. Interesting gamesmanship in this hand. BB thinks this gives him the right to act cocky, until his stack gets decimated over the course of a few hours trying to be the bully. I was not involved in this hand, and kept my mouth shut throughout, but I couldn't help thinking that something was amiss by revealing a card. In the course of flipping the 4 over while the hand was live, his other hole card almost fell off the table (BB was also drinking adult beverages). In this cardroom, I've seem a hand declared dead when a card leaves the table. Lesson I took from this hand: don't screw around and try to get tricky by showing a card while the hand is live. In this case, SB probably still would have called. |
