Chip hiding

Often, when I play in tournaments, [img]/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img] players will "hide" their large denomination chips behind their small ones, forcing me to ask them how much they have. Is this a breach of etiquette or a breach of rule. If it is a violation, what would be the penalty? [img]/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

I don't think it's against the rules, but this depends heavily on the ruleset that is used in the specific tournament.

i don't know if it's just bad etiquette or against the rules to hide your big chips, but i think it's against the rules. if you announce "all-in" and didn't see the villain actually has a lot of chips, you're out of luck though.

Keeping your large denomination chips in front is a rule of many tournaments and included in the Tournament Directors Assocition rulebook. Failure to do so would probably result in a warning and then time penalties (i.e. sit out for 10 minutes). At the end, it's all up to the card room and individual TD.

Some people do this by accident, but others on purpose. It is a breach of the rules (in most places). If you have a dealer they should tell the player not hide higher denominations. Once told players don't do it again. If they persist I suppose the tournament director would be called over and they would have the option of removing the offender from the tournament.

BTW, hiding the big chips seems to be a common practice at the cash tables at this casino. Is that typical?
