Re: What\'s to stop someone from setting up a non-profit online poker s

[ QUOTE ] What's to stop someone from setting up a non-profit online poker site? [/ QUOTE ] There is nothing stoping them. It would just be the biggest waste of time in the history if the internet/business. [/ QUOTE ] Why? I know if I knew the know-how to make a rake-free pokersite I would do so. I would only start the rake in the beginning to pay for startup/advertising and when that is done, the only rake you'd have to pay for is the servers. |

Re: What\'s to stop someone from setting up a non-profit online poker site?
Whats stopping them? Incentive...
But seriously, regulation of gambling varies from state to state. Some states require registration as a non-profit, and all kinds of other beauracratic crap. Not only would you have to meet the requirements of the state from which you were hosting, you probably would also have to meet the requirements of each state from which you allowed access. In other words, it'd be a major pain in the ass. Worse yet, since this is a website, its now become "interstate" and subject to federal regulation. The justice department's stance is that an old law barring the placing of wagers through telecommunications is applicable to online poker sites. However, at least one court has ruled that it does not apply to online poker sites. This is why all the sites are located off shore. If you were to host your non-profit poker site within US territory, it would subject you to prosecution by overzealous US attorneys, even if it is non-profit, as you would be aiding and abetting individuals in committing a crime according to the justice department's current stance. I guess you could always send the rake to the Republican National Committee, they'd appreciate it, I'd appreciate it, and, apparently, they don't prosecute big campaign contributors. GREED!
From a recent Times of India story on the owners of Party:
"...revolutionary business model, which makes nothing, sells nothing and profits purely from greed." |

Re: What\'s to stop someone from setting up a non-profit online poker site?
[ QUOTE ]
Basically a bunch of poker enthusists who are tech savy get together, and they charge enough rake to pay for the servers, bandwidth, and employees necessary to support the site but no more, aka a non-profit online poker site. The rake would be ultra ultra small or it could be a normal rake and they would refund everyone's account with the excess $$$ say each month after expenses were paid. Eh? [/ QUOTE ] You need the servers, employess etc etc up front so investment is the first problem who is going to invest in a business that is planning to make no profit. I think a lot on here underestimate how much time and money it would cost to launch a big internet business, there are the costs of developing the software, website and support structures then advertising as well and thats all before you have any income stream, and with wages and staff trianing etc you are going to have to be prepared for losses for a number of months. To do it you would have to make a charge whether a small rake, monthly fee or rebate less deductions whatever for a rakefree site to work it needs to have a profitmaking mentality. |
