You still don't get that
1) to him, the blasphamy isn't small stuff and 2) At least this one guy is saying "I don't care, screw you" And you still say ignore it, huh? It's always nice for a guest to dictate what a host to do Mr. Obtuse Manners |

Re: home game penalty for cussing - what to do?
You didn't say if these were cash games or tournaments. A chip penalty may slip by if the latter; you're asking for a fight if you're taking cash chips out of the former

For someone that is against cursing So let me understand your rules. No swearing but saying things like GD, Freaking, “HE (double hockey sticks)”, shoot, mother pucker, etc. Would be OK? Are you running a poker game or a kindergarten? I think an appropriate penalty for anyone that swears would be to make them hang out with you for a couple of days. Doesn’t anyone else have chips and a poker table where you live? [/ QUOTE ] He's NOT against swearing per se, just the phrase G*dda*n. However, to be "fair," he wants to enact a swearing ban, rather than just ban certain phrases. It's the backwards way to approach this issue IMO, but don't give him too much grief while putting words in his mouth. |

This is dumb. You don't like the lords name taken in vain. fine. it's your house. next time he does it, stand up, say 'i've told you before, and i'm going to tell you one more time. do not take the lords name in vain in my house. by continuing to do so, you are disrespecting me and my beliefs. if you do so again, i will ask you to leave, and not return. ok?' shake hands, sit down, and play poker. [/ QUOTE ] This is the best answer. Penalties are a bad idea, IMO. You then become a real 'nit' by having to deal with the whole penalty stuff each time it happens. Don't even bother with all of that. Just let people know that it's not something you're going to tolerate, and let that be the end of any debate on the matter. If people don't like it, they can play somewhere else. The OP cites the recent penalties assessed in major tournaments, but there's a problem with that. The whole thing didn't work, and vague situations created ridiculous rulings. I'm not saying that would be true of the OP's home game, but citing those rulings provoked me into pointing out how poorly the whole thing went. |

Re: home game penalty for cussing - what to do?
thanks for the post (and keep 'em coming).
Wow, some people don't like to read entire post. I never said I had a problem with cussing..thus "it affects me, too"(sorry Larry)...I said I don't like G.D. It is tourneys that we mostly play. Let's ignore the reason for the penalty and just focus on the penalty... what is the most reasonable penalty for a small home tourney? no penalties have been assessed. This is something that bothers me and I'm trying to get some advice on the best way to handle it without killing the game. |

Re: home game penalty for cussing - what to do?
I don't see why you have to have a general "no cussing" rule. It's your house, right? If you care so much about this specific phrase (and not others, you ass-hat) then say "In my house, we don't say G.D. Therefore, if you say G.D., you can't stay in my house."
Warn people ahead of time. Make the rule clear. Then enforce it. Just kick them out. If it seems blatant (as you suggested) then you won't have any problem kicking out the [censored] who's rubbing it in your face. So, to answer your requests specific penalty times, I say "1 week". -Sam |
