Your parents sound like smart people. Take the job and play poker on the side.

Or even better, slack off and play poker at work.

[ QUOTE ]
"responsible" and "irresponsible" are words other people use to judge decisions that aren't theirs.

[/ QUOTE ]

Some people wonder how I can do something as 'irresponsbile' as playing poker for a living.
I don't even know if I'm going to make any money at all on a given day/week.

Other people think I'm obnoxiously over-responsible and no fun at all. Afterall, I don't drink and drive...and I don't have any interest at all to throw down $100 chips at the blackjack table or play at limits well above my bankroll.
Somebody tells me of their progressive blackjack betting scheme that netter them $5000 in one night by just doubling-up their bets at the right times...and I tell them that that is awfully dangerous and to be careful and they are confused that I'm not on the same page as them regarding how cool and easy it is to make money at gambling.

I am/was in the semi same position as you.

I had done two years of school in the states where I was on athletic scholorship, but I got injured and transfered/ was accepted to McGill University in Montreal (which is one of the best/most competetive schools in the world). I was in a marketing program that would have easily secured, or atleast put me in a great position to have a very successful business career. I was in the library about to buy my books. I walked passed the travel section and that was it. It was like I had a epiphany, I couldn't do this. I called my parents, told them I wasn't going to go to school but I was going to go travelling instead. Thats it. I leave for India/Asia in Janurary for 6-8 months, living off poker (although I already was) and feel great about it.
Do what will make you happy.

Cheers

Sounds like you are going for your CPA. Once you get your CPA there will be lots of opportunities to work part time (such as only contracting during tax season with a firm, opening up a small firm on your own, working for a non profit). There is a huge shortage of CPA's/CA's in North America. The next 3 years of your life will be hell as I'm sure you are aware of (due to the long hours of articling).

Update (For those of you that have been eagarly awaiting closure):

I talked to the firm I was going to work for and they agreed to let me start in Jan of 2007. They said they would be glad to take me in Aug 2007, but couldn't guarentee a position.

I decided to take the safe route and accept the Jan gig. Yes, I will work for the man, but I have 8 months in which to travel and win the WSOP (read: the lottery).

Thanks for all the advice, I'm actually happy the way it worked out.

-Craig
