interesting responses so far. the funny thing is that i was doing this most of the time i was playing. i did not know there was a problem until he made a mockery of me. the entire table knew what it meant and understood my motion to be a check/pass, i have seen gestures way more subtle than what i was doing and nobody complained. i saw one guy that would merely extend his index finger as he rested his fist under his chin. (yes same table)

perhaps the dealer was having a bad night, but he should have been more professional about it. if he said "excuse me, but can you rap/tap the table or verbally say check?" he did not even have to say please, and that would have been completely fine, but he made a huge effort to flail his arms around.
