Why are guys with the name Eddy nicknamed "fast"?

Let's go with that. The movie came out around 1960 and was based on Minnesota Fats who played in the 40's and 50's. Therefore, that nickname had to be around way before the movie.

The Fast Eddie in the Hustler was nicknamed Fast Eddie because he played pool really fast. There's not much more to it than that.

Wrong. Rudolph Wanderone stole the nickname Minnesota Fats from the movie, claiming that the movie was about him. He had always been called New York Fats, Brooklyn Fats, or just Fats. He had never been to Minnesota.

Walter Tevis, who wrote The Hustler, has always denied the story is about him, and was pretty upset that he stole the name. He claims he made up Minnesota Fats and Fast Eddie.

that totally just answered your question. if we are to believe what has been stated in this thread, the nick name came from that movie, created by the writer.
