Re: Pet peeve: optional comma
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] (A) I had pancakes, eggs, and sausage for breakfast. (B) I had pancakes, eggs and sausage for breakfast. The missing comma in (B) is optional. However, it really irritates me when it's missing. Why? I don't know. Does this irritate anyone else? [/ QUOTE ] Seriously, my pet peeve is when the comma is there. (A) really bugs me. [/ QUOTE ] I'm with you. Then again, I've been a journalist for almost 10 years now. AP style is my friend. |

Re: Pet peeve: optional comma
It is incorrect to not include the missing comma. It likely irritates you because you really know this and were taught this originally, as used to be the norm. This started becoming discussed as "optional" when the concept of "Business English" came into vogue and then started to spill over elsewhere. There is no such thing as Business English. The rules of punctuation apply regardless.

The comma is not [censored] EXTRA Dammit!
These are two different breakfasts! In A, you ate them individually, but in B, your eggs and sausage are mixed together or you forgot an 'and' or you just hate me and are trying to confuse me! We're out of milk, coffee and cream, so get your lazy butt to the store. i needs mah breakfast! |
