i find it hard to believe the world's greatest athlete can compete in a sport that doesn't require him to be at least standing upright.

i know it's hard and everything, but he's sitting down.

[/ QUOTE ]

i had not thought about this, but it's a great answer.

[/ QUOTE ]

No it's not.

I think you need a skill level included to be considered a great athlete. Body control, hand-eye coordination, quick reactions, or something along those lines. So a RB making a great cut in a addition to being fast and strong makes a great athlete. Or a baseball player being able to alter his swing mid-pitch to foul off a curveball. It's not just about being in great physical shape. So given his hitting abilities and even pitching abilities - I would say Babe Ruth was a better athlete that Lance Armstrong.

[/ QUOTE ]

what about things like strength and stamina?

Don't pro cyclists stand on the pedals 90% of the time?

It enhances it, but what I'm saying is that if you take a somewhat uncoordinted clutz to the weight room to increase his bench press, he's stronger, but he's not a better athlete.

Not many of the cheerers were Americans. Millions turns out to do this, I have never seen millions of non-Americans show up to cheer Tiger Woods or Pete Sampras.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is possibly one of th3e dumbest statements ever made.

I love Lance Armstrong but get real. The guy rides a bike.

I love Jerry Rice but get real. The guy catches a ball.

You're a smart guy, why do you have to resort to mischaracterizing something to make your point?

I love Lance Armstrong but get real. The guy rides a bike. Plus, you'd have to consider the top decathletes

[/ QUOTE ]

...I'm confused. You think a decathlete is more of an athlete than Lance Armstrong?

100m sprint. Long jump. Shot put. High jump. 400m. 110m Hurdles. Discus. Pole Vault. Javelin Throw. 1500m.

The vast majority of reasonably fit people in the world could complete that lineup of events. They may not do it quickly, but there's no doubt that they'd be able to do it. In 1 days time too, even though a decathlon is 2. Cycling 3600 km in 24 days cross-country...not so sure that the people in the world that could do it number more than, what, 50000?
