Default Shreveport, Louisiana

I just got invited to go on a 14hr road trip to Shreveport. I'm leaving tomorrow(Tuesday) around noon and will be back by Friday afternoon. It will be a short trip, but hopefully we'll have time to play some poker.

From what I've read, the Horseshoe & Hollywood are the only two casinos there w/ poker rooms.

If anyone has any info about these cardrooms or the city itself, I'd be grateful.

What limits are available, waiting lists on week days, general quality of the rooms, number of tables, hotel rates, etc.

Also, are there any other fun attractions in the city? Any bars or restaurants that are really good?

Thank you everyone

Moyer

Travel 14 hours to shreveport? There are not any other casino/cardrooms you could go to within a 14 hr drive? Why Shreveport of all places?

Sort of a long story. A friend of mine's father owns a small trucking business in Iowa. He got a new order for Hummer parts from a GM plant in Shreveport, but all of his regular drivers aren't due back for another week, so his son(my friend) is driving for him.

I'm just going along for the ride. We have plenty of time to get there and back so it should be an easy trip. We're planning on stopping somewhere in Missouri(probably Springfield) for a night on the way there and another night on the way back, but to my knowledge, there are no poker rooms anywhere near Springfield.

We should roll into Shreveport around 6pm Wednesday and we'll have the rest of the night to gamble &/or have a few drinks.

Are the casinos there really crappy or what? If they're bad, we could just skip them and drive back to Little Rock for the night.

Shreveport, that is where the poker giants are playing against...Andy Beal? I think that is his name...the huge millionaire, playing against Brunson, Lederer, Harman, Ivey, etc etc etc...they are playing some huge stakes. obviously not going on right now, but i remember reading a thing in cardplayer magazine a couple months ago about this...

Beal doesn't play poker in Shreveport. He plays in various private games here in Dallas.

Here's what you do...

Take I80 => I75 => I55 => St. Charles (outskirts of St. Louis). Play the Ameristar there.

I155 => Shreveport.

I'm not sure why everyone here is "hatin" on Shreveport. I live in Longview, TX which is between Dallas and Shrevport and I can assure you it's not THAT bad. In fact the Horseshoe is very nice, it's definately on par with lots of Las Vegas hotels/casinos.

Since your coming to the GM plant anyway to pick up parts I certainly wouldn't go out of the way to go to St. Louis.

You'll enjoy both the Horseshoe and the Hollywood poker rooms. If your into tournaments, the Hollywood is now offering daily tournaments that start at 10AM (I think). The Horseshoe offers tournaments on Monday and Wednesday at 6PM.

As far as ring games go, 4-8 is as low as you will find for limit games. If NL is your game you can usually find a 2-5 game going. Lots of fishy people at the 4-8 games but, be careful with your pre-flop raises because you will only very rarely run anyone out. It is very typical to get 8-9 callers preflop even when facing a raise. Thats great when you hit the flop, but not so great when you have pocket kings and a ace comes on the flop.

There are lots of restraunts and bars scattered throughout the city. If you want to give some cajun food a try, I would suggest Ralph & Kakoos which is located just off I-20 on Old Minden Road. Very good cajun seafood dishes are served here.

Lots of out of towners get confused by this so here is a quick geography tip, Shreveport has a sister city called Bossier City. The Red River divides these two cities. Out of towners call the two cities combined "Shreveport" but in fact they are two seperate cities. The Horseshoe is actually located in Bossier City, while Hollywood is in Shreveport, even though they are probably less than a mile apart.

Have a good trip, and let us know how it went when you get back.

Sounds good to me. I'm not expecting the Bellagio. I just thought it would be fun to play in Louisiana. Nice change of scenery.

We're actually hauling a load of parts there, not picking them up (not that it makes any difference to us).

Forgot to update.

Long story short, I only got to play for about 2 hours. There were about 6 full tables going. One or two 2-5NL and the rest 4-8. Not sure why they didn't try to open anything higher. I played 4-8. Horrible cards. I played 3 hands other than the blinds. All 3 were 5-5. Missed on two of them, won one unimproved on ragged flop. It was the only pot I won. Some maniac raised my BB almost every time so I'm not sure if I ever got a free play.

I was down $30 when I left. Very good game though, very loose, full of happy players having fun. Just wish I would've gotten better cards.

We ate dinner at the buffet there, which was very nice.

At one point though, a fight broke out between a couple drunk women and a large man sitting at a nearby table. Harsh words were exchanged between one of the women and the man, then out of nowhere the other women takes a swing at him. Luckily she was wasted and she totally missed him. Her friend pulled her back, then the cops showed up and escorted them out. Pretty funny.

Thanks for the update. Too bad you only got to play for that short of time.

Did you play at the Horseshoe or Hollywood?
