The probability that this die will land on six is one in two. That is, Either it'll land on six, or it won't. Since I'm a nice guy I'll lay you 2:1 on this 1:1 proposition, k? We'll play till I go broke.

[/ QUOTE ]

Much as I hate the thought of defending Swinburne from anything, he did not make that mistake. He has a, no doubt potty, argument to justify god existing more than 50% of the time, its not a deduction from god exists or doesn't. [if memory serves, D'Alembert did makes this error but he was a mathematician ]

Has anyone any reason to believe there are mathematical/logical errors in the rest of his argument rather than just some highly dubious assumptions.

Default Morongo !

[/ QUOTE ]
Yep. As Prof. Mike Caro posited, "In the beginning everything was even money".

[ QUOTE ]
2. The probability that God became incarnate, that is embodied in human form, is also one in two.

[/ QUOTE ]
Are there only two forms? I musta missed something. Why couldn't God become incarnate in some other carnal form? Wouldn't a Talking Donkey be much more persuasive than Jesus riding a donkey?

[ QUOTE ]
3. The evidence for God's existence is an argument for the resurrection.

[/ QUOTE ]
Not according to the Hebrew Testament! Call BossJJ for details.

[ QUOTE ]
4. The chance of Christ's resurrection not being reported by the gospels has a probability of one in 10.

[/ QUOTE ]
So one in ten times a text that's supposed to be born specifically out of the resurrection would NOT mention at all the resurrection ??

Who's putting out those lines? If that was a sports book, it would have closed after one hour, tops.

[ QUOTE ]
5. Considering all these factors together, there is a one in 1,000 chance that the resurrection is not true.

[/ QUOTE ]
Can't wait for the arithmetic.

As a Christian, I believe it is especially important for me to dismiss this garbage. Nuts like this professor do a lot of damage to other Christians, at least in the eyes of non-Christians.

The Great Swinburne-Sklansky Debate. Each man pulls probabilities about god out of his ass and throws them at the other until one is too buried to breathe.

Thats about right. Swinburne's argument uses bayes theorem and some arbitary looking probabilities to show the resurrection is very likely to be true. Sound familiar

Its depressing that posters who pride themselves on their rationality are so sure that Swinburne's failings are mathematical when a few minutes googleplexing would show them that 'The Age and Catholic News' representation of his argument is highly misleading - probably because they, rather than Swinburne, didn't understand the maths.

I trust you guys assign probabilities a bit more objectively when you're playing poker
