I play at a local casino 3-6 and usually just buy in for 60 dollars. I would like to play higher and I definitely think that I have the ability to as well, however, I am a college student and need the money for other things. Anyways, I have had problems recently with running low on chips if I lose even one decent sized pot, the only time that I can really play my game is if I win a decent sized pot early. Any reccomendations on what I should buy into the game for considering my limited bankroll?

Standard is about 25BB ($150) If thats too much for you, you really shouldn't be playing 3/6 imho.

at 3/6 i always buyin for 2 racks. i would NEVER sit in a game unless i had 25 bets with me ($150 at 3/6). think of it like this: if can put in 4 bets on every street, then you could possibly lose 12 bets in one hand. this is unlikely, but i have seen pots that were indeed capped on every street. $60 is only 10 bets. if you are lucky enough to flop a straigh flush after capping it preflop, dont you want to make sure that you can cap it on every subsequent betting round with the guy that thinks his A high flush is the nuts? some people do give odd looks when i buyin for 2 racks at 3/6, but buying in once for $200 sure beats buying $60 and losing that, only to rebuy 15 times for $20 each time. all that to say, if i were you i would wait until you can comfortably buyin for at least $100-$150.

If you feel short stacked... buyin for more. 25 bb min for most limit players. you should also have a bankroll of 300bb. (assuming ur building one) thats 1800 dollars. BTW i dont know the structure of your 3-6 game, but most are beatable due to tips and the rake. You should start at 5-10 or higher, but make sure your game is soild before you start read ssh.

Proper bankroll = 300 x The Big Bet

If bankroll = $60, then Big Bet = $0.20. You need to play microlimits online and build your bankroll if you want to play higher.

[/ QUOTE ]First off, where did you get the fact that his bankroll was $60? He said he bought in for $60 each session. That make you think he has $60 total?

Second, "proper bankroll" is a pretty vague term. Macdona1, if you have an allotted bankroll which, if busted, will end your poker career, then you need 300 BB. This calculation is already assuming you're a winning player. (It also makes some assumptions about HOW winning.)

However, if you're able to lose 150 BB, wait a few paychecks, and then get back in the game, then ignore these bozos telling you that you have to have 300BB in the bank. You just have to be able to lose 250BB and keep playing.

That said, if you can't buy-in for a 25BB at a game, you shouldn't be playing it. In fact, I rebuy as soon as I hit 12BB; I want to make sure I don't have to go all-in. If you're a better player than your opponents, you should want the chance to make as many decisions as possible, not watch the all-in.

I think the BB thing is a tad overrated. In that since I normally buy in for 100 in a 3/6 game because it is simple to just get one rack.

I think 60 is a little short, but if that is all you have to get into the game and think you can crush it then go for it. I do agree with the idea that you should throw your 60 online and you would be able to build it up faster than playing in that live game.

I agree with the 1 rack thing. First time at a B&M cardroom I used my standard formula for online play (I also thought that I could not buy chips from the dealer and did not want to have to go back to the cashier). I had $200 in my pocket and sat down with a rack of whites and a bunch of reds. 2 players on my right immediately got up and the rest of the table looked at me like I had a c@ck growing out of my forehead. The most common buy-in for 3/6 is 1 rack of whites, so that's what I do. I like to be percieved as "common" at the table anyway.

Try to keep at least 12 BBs on the table at all times. That way you can keep up with a 4-bet cap on every street when you hit big. I also agree with what another poster said: build up a bankroll online and just play out of that rather than using money that you would otherwise be paying rent and buying ramen with.
